TRANSFERENCE: IN PURSUIT OF PRESENCE — LESS IS MORE
Around 2001, my focus shifted from concealment to a new theme: how to heighten the subject’s physical presence.
The answer I arrived at was an expression of radical subtraction.
Stripping away background and color, I adopted an ink transfer technique that eliminated even the trace of the brushstroke—creating a canvas where the painter’s warmth had vanished.
In the midst of that monochrome stillness, I painted a single flower or fruit by hand in vibrant color.
I believed that by shedding all superfluous details, the main motif would emerge with a far stronger, more undeniable presence.
From this philosophy, the still-life series LESS IS MORE was born.
“Not only what to paint, but what not to paint.”
