SKY AND THE VOID: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE ABSTRACT AND THE SUBJECT
In Japanese, the concept of emptiness is written with the character “空” (kara)—the exact same character used for “sky” (sora).
To me, the void spreading across my canvas is this vast sky itself.
In this series, the sky is not a mere backdrop, but the central subject embodying the “beauty of the void.”
An infinite, abstract space (the sky) and a dense, historic subject (the architecture)—by deliberately choosing “not to paint” and leaving the sky largely untouched, a beautiful tension is born against the detailed structures.
I believe this fleeting confrontation completes the painting’s beauty.
In this seemingly paradoxical approach lies the unique Japanese aesthetic sensibility that I have inherited.
